Medical Student Speak January 29, 2007

  • OSCE – Objective Structured Clinical Examination – AKA how to scare the holy shit out a bunch of medical students who aren’t taking a clinical skills session seriously. This is a practical exam that often involves timed ‘stations’ where the student passes from room to room, or curtain to curtain and is required to perform various practical tasks. Highly stressful and guaranteed to lead to a long period of public-house based relaxation followed by a headache
  • PBL – Problem Based Learning. A style of learning on a similar style to the FoFo method, except usually overcomplicated by the token graduates within the group, who insist on making far too much work for everyone and enjoy showing off.
  • Primary care placement – time spent in a GP surgery.
  • Secondary care placement – time spent in a hospital, taking advantage of the NHS discount for hot cheap meals that don’t involve using a shared kitchen and dirty teatowels.

Sadly, so very very true. Just the word ‘OSCE’ can stop our lot in their tracks.
